Impact Details
In April 2022, SheFlies successfully conducted an outreach at Epe Girls Junior and Senior Secondary School, Lagos Nigeria, a remote town in eastern Lagos. 750 girls were introduced to drone technology and its real-world applications. The programme featured interactive sessions on drone technology, career pathways in STEM, and live flight demonstrations of a quadcopter and VTOL (Vertical TakeOff and Landing) drones, inspiring students to explore engineering and emerging technologies.
Before SheFlies came to our school, I had never even seen a drone before, let alone imagined working with one. Now, I not only understand what a drone is, but I am now learning how to operate one and I can see how this technology connects to my future in engineering. This programme didn’t just teach me about drones—it opened my eyes to new possibilities, giving me the confidence to pursue a career I once thought was out of reach.
I used to believe that STEM was not for me, but SheFlies changed that. During the sessions, I watched as a drone followed a programmed flight path, and for the first time, I saw how coding could bring technology to life. Seeing how small adjustments in programming could change its movement made me realise that I could be part of creating something powerful. Now, I am inspired to explore coding and robotics further, knowing that my skills can shape the future.
Growing up, I rarely saw women in technology, and I didn’t think I belonged in that space. When SheFlies introduced us to drone technology, I was fascinated by how it combined engineering, coding, and real-world problem-solving. Hearing from the female founder of SheFlies made me realise that there is a place for me in STEM. This experience shifted my mindset—I now see technology not as something intimidating, but as a field where I can contribute and thrive.
